Can You Purchase or Add a Loft for Sleeping in a Mobile Home?

You’re looking for a way to expand the sleeping space in your mobile home. Since you’d like extra space for sticking a bed or two, you’re wondering about a mobile home loft. Can you get a mobile home that has one built in? Or can you build on one of your own?

REASONS FOR A MOBILE HOME LOFT

Maybe you’ve already remodeled your own master bedroom, but you’re looking to add a little more space for others to sleep. Alternatively, you’re trying to get some bedroom space for your kids. Or you entertain a lot so you’d like a place for out-of-town guests to stay overnight.

But there are other reasons a mobile home loft could have occurred to you. You could be looking to turn one of your downstairs bedrooms into a home office. In that case, you’re thinking you could move the sleeping space up a level, leaving you plenty of room downstairs for your desk, chair, computer, etc.

On the other hand, if you’re an artist, you may be trying to create a studio in what has always been a bedroom. Accordingly, you need a place to sleep when you set up shop in your new art workspace.

If you have little ones, you may be looking to create a playroom on the first floor. A place where you can keep track of the kids while cooking dinner or cleaning up. You’re thinking this could be your chance. Move a bedroom out and load the “currently empty room” up with toys.

IS IT POSSIBLE?

Undoubtedly, a mobile home loft with extra space is something most mobile home owners would benefit from. But before you start making plans, it’s important to know your options. Most mobile homes don’t have the height to make a custom loft possible. However, there are alternatives. Park model homes, while not technically mobile homes, do provide you with the ability to have a loft.In case you’ve never heard of a park model RV, here’s Wikipedia to do some explaining: “Park model trailers, although considered recreational vehicles, are transportable and primarily designed for long-term or permanent placement at a destination where an RV or mobile home is allowed. When setting up, park models are connected to the utilities necessary to operate home style fixtures and appliances. Park models are popular with people for use as a cottage, vacation or retirement home.”

CHECK OUT THESE OPTIONS

Take a look at the upper sleeping area in The Kemah Loft. While the ceiling is not exactly tall, who needs a tall ceiling while they’re sleeping? Have fun stringing some lights around the railing to up the coziness.

Or check out this park model RV from Champion Homes. Don’t forget to hang some cute and very short curtains from that upper window.

CAN YOU BUILD ONE?

This is a difficult question, so we suggest that your very first step should be to check with a licensed professional. While we’re not completely ruling out the possibility, keep in mind the need to get any proper permits before starting work. Also, know any rules about building that are imposed by your mobile home park, if you’re in one. Reach out to some local contractors and ask if any of them have attempted a similar project.

NOT TIRED? MORE TO DO IN A LOFT THAN JUST SLEEP.

Now, you may be wondering what else you could do with your mobile home loft. Though you might feel like sleeping during the day, most of us head to our bedrooms at night. So that leaves the rest of the day open to other activities. Are there any daytime uses for your loft?

MAKE A KIDS’ HIDEOUT

First, you could save a corner of that loft to create a special area for the kids. Find a couple bean bag chairs and add some crates of books and toys. Also, snag a small rug that could clearly outline the kid space.CREATE A GUEST AREA

If you don’t have a designated guest house, use your loft as an area for overnight guests to stay. Set out a little basket of toiletries your guests might now have. We all forget sometimes. Next, add a few snack bars and water bottles. Plus, you should bring up a small fan so that your guests can enjoy some airflow if the loft is stuffy.

CREATE COMFORT THAT ANYONE CAN ENJOY!

If you’ve found a contractor who believes he can build you a mobile home loft up to applicable codes, plan to fill it carefully. Though a loft may be small, it doesn’t have to be cramped nor ugly. Try not to overfill your sleeping area, but have some fun decorating according to the season. Also, be sure to have a comfy mattress for hours of relaxing sleep!
