Average Cost to Relocate a Mobile Home and Other Frequently Asked Moving Questions

Updated: Aug 26

There are several reasons you may want to know the average cost to move a mobile home. Perhaps you’re looking to move for work, school, family, or health reasons. Or perhaps you’re helping somebody else out. Maybe you’re trying to get a family member to move in nearby, and you’d like to be able to tell them what kind of price tag they’re looking at.

Alternatively, you could be just tossing around the idea of a move. You’re not sure yet if you’ll actually do it. But you just want to know what your options are. And you’re trying to get an idea of how much those options will cost you.

AVERAGE COST TO MOVE A MOBILE HOME

So what is the average cost to move a mobile home? It would be convenient if we magically quoted you one price and said, “that’s the price you’ll always pay.” Unfortunately, it’s just not that simple.

Although you may be well aware of this, we’ll say it anyway. Costs to move a mobile home will vary. And multiple factors affect moving cost. “How far are you moving?” is one question to start with. Obviously, you should expect moving across town to be cheaper than moving across the country.

ONE PERSPECTIVE ON THE AVERAGE COST TO MOVE A MOBILE HOME

Let’s dive into the average cost to move a mobile home.

First up is Robert Moreschi’s analysis from Moving.com, “On average, most companies that move mobile homes will charge anywhere from $5 to $15 per mile to transport the home…” However, he explains that transport cost isn’t the only cost you’re going to run into.

Later, Moreschi finishes: “In total, moving your mobile home will cost you anywhere in the range of $6,000 to $20,000, based on the size of the home you’re moving and how many miles you need to move it.”

LET’S GIVE EVERYBODY A SAY…

  • Now, take a look at cost estimates from mobilehomerepair.com. As they address the question of cost, they state, “In general terms, you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $6,000 to move a manufactured home. If you plan to move a mobile home more than 100 miles you can expect the moving costs to go as high as $15,000 or more.” However, as they wisely advise, it depends a lot on “your specific situation.”

  • Finally, Hometown Demolition’s article can also weigh in here. They say “If you’re thinking about moving your mobile home, expect to pay anywhere from $1,200 – $3,500 per half in order to have it broken down, moved, and set up in its new location—depending on how far you intend to transport it, of course.”

Now that we’ve touched on the average cost to move a mobile home, let’s address a couple other important questions. Since you’ve got “moving” on your mind, you should consider these two things.

WHAT ABOUT A PERMIT?

You might be asking whether you need a permit to move your mobile home. You’ve heard permits mentioned before. And it’s great that you’re asking this question. It’s definitely better to address this before you move, instead of discovering after a move that you were supposed to have one.

In short, yes you may need a permit. We suggest you take Tony Guerra’s advice and “check local regulations prior to movement.” Also, check out our mention of permits here.

CAN I MOVE MY MOBILE HOME WHEREVER I WANT TO?

Again, this is a good question to be asking. No, you can’t always move your mobile home wherever you want. There’s a little something called “wind zone,” and it affects where certain homes are allowed to be moved to. A little more on that here.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Grab your phone and start calling. Armed with a knowledge of what kind of mobile home you’re trying to move (size, etc.), call local mobile home movers. Next, ask for a quote. Keep a pen and paper handy so you can write down what you’re told by each company. Once you do this, you may find that the most sensible option for you is pretty clear.
